"DuPond" Gardens probably refers to Longwoood Gardens and Winterthur,
both of which were duPont family estates. They are in the
Wilmington/Philadelphia area, a rather easy drive from Baltimore or
York. As someone said, not many irises to be seen there, but
Longwood Gardens is undoubtedly the finest public garden in America.
You could hardly do it justice in a day. It not only includes
beautiful mature plantings in a century-old arboretum, but a
spectacular series of fountains and an immense conservatory with
sections for epiphytes, palms, orchids, etc. Just outside the
conservatory are lily ponds with the famous Longwood Hybrids of the
Queen Victoria waterlily. And on and on. Winterthur has less
gardens but incorporates a wonderful art collection and performance
center.

"The expression 'a liberal education' originally meant one worthy of
freemen. Such is education simply in a true and broad sense. But
education ordinarily so called--the learning of trades and
professions which is designed to enable men to earn their living, or
to fit them for a particular station in life--is servile."
