    This would be Iris missouriensis. It needs excellent drainage 
and ample moisture in spring. I have killed many trying to grow it 
in Missouri. If we have enough moisture we don't have the 
drainage. I have seen it growing in run off of snowmelt in the 
mountains. If your grandmother lives near it's home she at least 
has a chance.

PS it always helps to give  a clue as to the area you live in order 
to advise growing conditions, It's a big country.
