If we want to know how long a variety will bloom, we should count days in
bloom not number of buds. While a variety with high bud count is likely to
bloom longer than one with low bud count, this is by no means an absolute
correlation. The blanket statement than a variety with less than 7 buds
should receive no points sounds like it was written by a committee. If so
they are confusing judging an iris plant with judging an iris stalk. A stalk
might not be in bloom for two weeks, while the plant could be in bloom much
longer.
Some years ago there was an attempt to force the concept of a "garden stalk"
onto show bench judging on the grounds that a good garden iris was also a
good exhibition iris. It didn't work in my area. IMO we can deal with both
concepts. Gardeners who don't like four flowers open at a time needn't grow
the varieties that do this. Those gardeners whose passion is for showing
needn't grow those that open one at a time.
I have in front of me the October 2000 Bulletin of the AIS. There is Stairway
to Heaven with four open flowers. Certainly this is an exhibition stalk in
any show. It happens to also be an excellent garden variety that fully
deserved the Dykes Medal. Not something that can be said of many DMs!
