Betty,
Iris stalks are probably sensitive to frost, if it is severe enough, at
various stages of their development. The worst experience I have had in
over twenty years of growing irises at this location was in 1990, a year in
which spring came early and the temperatures were consistently around ten
degrees above normal beginning around the middle of March. By the latter
part of April the stalks on most TBs were beginning to emerge from the fans
and the SDBs were just starting to bloom. On April 30 there was a severe
freeze with the temperature dropping to the 18-20 degree range. I lost 90%
of my TB bloom that year. The only ones that succeeded in blooming were
growing in the lee of some shrubs.
Hope things don't turn out too bad for you!
