All iris are created different. Some (like Ebony Dream or Bengal Tiger)
become stunted if not separated and moved regularly. Too much trouble for
me. Pagan Pink always seems to sulk for one year after moving, then becomes
one of the biggest, strongest, and most reliable clumps in the garden.
Leave it alone! Persian Berry was one of the standouts at my previous home,
in a beautiful clump almost untouched for 6 years. Dawning is a great iris
for me; its increase seems to create the perfect spacing all by itself.
Many iris are just lousy performers (Spirit World), or don't like a
particular climate (Edith Wohlford). Some need a good freeze (Schreiner
neglectas); some like a soggy spring; some seem to need a specific
temperature range for spring growth and bloom, and if summer arrives too
soon they won't show. When Daredevil finally bloomed in my garden after 5
years, I was glad that the single fan bloomed out (no matter how nice it
looked). With this year's rain I have a number of stalks on iris that have
never bloomed for me before.
