Hardiness of Rhizomes

I dug my bed and bagged up about 15-20 rhizomes (I misspelled it last time -
knew it didn't look right but. . . ) for a friend who was told they would be
under the lilac bush. . .I forgot them and she obviously did too because the
following spring when cleaning and pruning the bush I found the bag. . .the
iris had grown through the bag and were rooted into the soil!!! This was in
Hobbs, NM. In Arkansas I have had to hold rhizomes from July until the
following spring before being able to plant them. They were in paper sacks,
in an unheated building over the winter. . they froze. . .and looked awful
but they bloomed and flourished for years! Some are really hardy!
