I have been told here that the freezes Mon.,Tues., and Wed. nights would have damaged the bloomstalks down in the bases of the iris fans and therefor
we will have poor bloom this spring. Is this because of the warm weather preceeding the freeze, the lateness of it, or what?
One result of our mild Feb. was a real blessing. Last Sunday I looked out the window and thought I saw a tall bloomstalk on Aaron's Dagger. It grows on the south side of our house next to a small greenhouse that protects it from the west. Sure enough, there were 5 stalks on it, one showing color. Monday I cut it and today it bloomed, just in time for me to take it to a dear friend's house after her husband's funeral. She thought it a perfect tribute.

Well, ptuii... it was about 15 here last night! Another benefit of the
lack of rain is that lack of cloud cover has let night temperatures fall
below freezing fairly often, so growth is not as tender as it would be
with warmer nights. I hope....
This is too early in the season for damage to iris flower stalk
primordia, still snugly undeveloped inside the rhizomes... [she says
wishfully...]. But not too early to do damage to foliage on the foolish
irises that had already started growing. Opportunity for spring rot....

cross-hairs of this one...
