CULT: TB: Byers rebloomers, freezes

<I have been told here that the freezes Mon.,Tues., and Wed. nights

we will have poor bloom this spring. Is this
because of the warm weather preceeding the freeze, the lateness of it,
or what?>

A combination of both - when the irises are growing rapidly, they seem
to be much more susceptible to damage. Lush, growing foliage is more
likely to be damaged than little overwintering nubs of leaves & even
when stalks aren't showing yet, the cells that become stalks are
susceptible to damage if they are rapidly growing, getting ready to
become bloomstalks, hidden down inside the rhizome.

<WINESAP is in bloom right now. Well, one advantage to pot culture is
that on

plant can come inside...>

Ok, that answers the question I had yesterday - I ordered a batch of
Byers rebloomers one year, hearing that they did well, & the following
spring, following a perhaps worse than usual murderous late frost, they
were so badly damaged that they all died. Some from subsequent soft
rot, some were just frozen dead in their tracks. They all were frozen
to the ground. I was left with the impression that Byers rebloomers are
generally not particularly resistant to our late freezes, but maybe some
are tougher than others?

Mark, you used to grow them in Kentucky too, didn't you? Any that you
especially recommend? Others in Region 7, 24 or other areas with lots
of rain & killing late spring freezes?

I think I got some more Byers intros from Suttons last year, but haven't
been out to check them lately.
