Char Randall asked:
<Betty, It's never too late for me to hear about favorites! Do you have
any other Aitkens that do well for you? Your description of STATELY ART
sounds very nice. How close to the coast are you? What sort of winter
temps do you get?
I am about 8 miles inland, as the crow flies, about 90 miles south of the
Oregon Border - closest big town (25,000) is Eureka on Humboldt Bay. Our
winter temps dip to the teens frequently. Compared to most of you folks, it
is a very mild winter. My complaint is that we have no summer. When the
San Joaquin Valley warms up, the moist air from the coast cannot get over
the coastal mountains, and settles on us as fog, fog, fog and more fog - and
a constant, fierce, westerly wind. A heat wave here is 75 degrees! But
when it cools off in the Valley we have nice weather beginning in September
and somethimes October. That really promotes the rebloom tendency in the
bearded Iris. It's really "borderline" growing conditions for bearded
(difficult to control brown spot because of the humidity), but great for
beardless. The color that we get here for PCNs is so vibrant that one of
mine was disqualified by a judge last year at the Santa Rosa Iris Show; she
wrote on my tag that it had been soaked in food coloring.
Everything that I purchase from Aitken's Garden does well here, whether
introduced by Terry and Barbara or not. I especially like the following
Aitken introductions:
Angel Heart a rebloomer IB
Champagne Encore IB rebloomer
Apricot Drops MTB
I also buy Japanese Iris from Aitken's. Again, all his intros do well in
the garden.
Alpine Majesty
Butterflies in Flight
Dino
Electric Glow
Electric Rays
Raspberry Glow
