Patricia, it shouldn't be difficult or complicated - I had much higher
germination rates in the past than in the last two years and was just
throwing them in regular garden dirt in a big washtub with holes in the
bottom for drainage. I planted seeds in November or December and when I
got around to it, moved seedlings to the garden. Sometimes, this meant
I didn't see seedlings bloom for several years. Now that I'm retired, I
have time to mess with seedlings more & am trying to speed things up a
bit.
From this and the last batch of discussion about seed germination, I
think I would conclude that my terrible germination the last two years
is probably due to having moved my seed 'flats' (old washtubs etc) into
a spot where they get full sun for more than half a day. Their old
location had gotten too shady (overgrown by an elm). I suspect they
were getting too dry at a critical time in germination in thier new
location. By the time bloom season was underway, the combination of
allergic fog and wanting to be amongst my iris blooms undoubtedly
resulted in neglect of the seed flats. I'm definitely going to make
sure seed pots are in high shade, indirect light for future outdoor
germination.
Of the seeds that I soaked & refrigerated for two months, seeds from one
cross looked a bit more pointy on one end after I removed the seed
coats, as tho they were about to germinate. I put seeds from that cross
in pots after removing seed coats from half the seeds. Sure enough, two
seedlings are up from seeds with seed coats removed.

<Lots of germination takes place during the bloom season,..>
This is much later than I was expecting. I'm sure Walter has told me
this before, but I had forgotten. By mid-May, it is often hot (80s,
90s) dry, and windy.
