Thirty years of drought in winning a Dykes' Medal will be ended this year for our
good friend and renowed hybridizer Keith Keppel when he finally wins his second.
A blue self called BABBLING BROOK brought Keith his first Dykes way back in
1972, and thirty years later he gets his second. But, which one?
FANCY WOMAN or SPIRIT WORLD? My mind is made up, but what do others
think?
Seems strange that history will repeat itself, and the 'plicata man' will not win with a
plicata but on a luminata, not truly a plicata as such but in the family and a product
of plicata breeding.
I thought CARAMBA or BROADWAY, two very popular plics of their day by Keith
were good candidates for a Dykes, but they were not picked. I was disappointed.
As a credit to their qualities, you'll still see them listed in catalogs today and growing
in many gardens, blooming their heads off and wowing visitors who are seeing
them for the first time. CARAMBA was the first introduced variegata plicata, if I
remember correctly. BROADWAY might have been even more famous and
produced many wonderful children including OFF BROADWAY, with the very
attractive and consistent virus marks in the standards.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that some day one of Keith's plics will eventually
win a Dykes. LOVELY DAWN has Dykes' Medal written all over it, but will the
judges notice?
Wouldn't it be something if the vote were a tie between FANCY WOMAN and
SPIRIT WORLD and the Awards Chair would declare co-Dykes for 2002? It would
be a first and an honor that is quite fitting!
