Re: AIS:2002 Dykes, End of a Keppel Drought

Keppel's California iris looked so gorgeous on paper that I always felt bad that most of them just didn't like this climate, not for me nor for any of the iris gardeners I know in this area (NW Iowa, SE South Dakota, NE Nebraska. Since he moved to Oregon--and I've been told that one reason for the move was to get hardier "blood" into his breeding program--there seems to be some indication his beautiful things will do better here. If the SEA POWER I saw last year in Larry Harder's garden is a sample, and if it continues to thrive, I would have to agree with Bill Shear that it is certain to be a Dykes candidate. It's an iris to die for; I just hope it isn't one that will die for its growers in this tri-state region. I certainly want to try it, though I don't want to spend $40 to find out that it doesn't grow well.
