Rita,
What is super ammonium? I don't think I have ever seen it.

We grow about 40 AB (no pure arils have survived for long) here in
our Missouri Zone 5 garden and have followed Luella Danielson's
advice: Plant it in well drained (lots of sand) soil and if you lose
it, plant a different one!
We have done that for 7-8 years and have these 40 which grow very
well and have planted about that many, some several times, that don't
like it here! Many of the newer arilbreds are much more hardy both
for cold and moisture. The latest "grows like gang-busters" AB is
Rick Tasco's CHOCOLATE MINT (98).
We have two beds for the ABs. First is on the slope at the top of
the driveway, the other is a raised bed farther down the slope. Both
are about 8-10 inches deep in a mixture of 70% builder's sand (NOT
children's play sand) and 30% good rich topsoil. Both beds have been
in a while and we fertilize each year with Luella's formula of 5
parts superphosphate, 1 part each blood meal, bone meal and super
amonium, scratch in a handful per plant about 6 weeks before bloom
time. By the way, dianthus (carnations) also like these growing
conditions and do very well in the same beds. Others who grow arils
and AB in this area also plant some under the eaves of the house to
limit summer rain but we have chosen not to fuss and have just the
ones who are happy where we plant them.
Hope this helps!
