I suspect that the lady is referring to I. unguicularis. To quote Brian
Mathew's  "The Iris", page 129, ".....delightful primrose-scented lavender
flowers in winter, from November to February."   Mathew lists ten
varieties - the most popular/well-known (my selection) are Walter Butt and
Mary Barnard. It will quite often bloom through the snow.
