Hi Mike,
I think the reason they list the seedling parentage is actually to
help other hybridizers trace linebreeding. A seedling that is not
good enough to be introduced may carry a trait that the hybridizer is
working towards. By using seedlings that get closer and closer to
your goal, you may be able to link two traits such as desired color
and reblooming traits. I have also noticed in the Byers and Hager
lines, that many of the introductions have the same unintroduced
seedlings as a parent. T3711Pc(Space Odessey X Socialite), B-8-4
(Cease-Fire x Sky Hooks) This can give you a clue as to where the
desired trait may have orginated. It would also useful in tracing
recessive traits. Since the seedlings were never introduced, there
wouldn't be a source to look up their parentage. Even though you
wouldn't get the same seedling if you did the same cross, you have a
better chance in getting the trait your after if you repeat the cross
or try a similar cross using the introduced offspring on another
introduction with similar background.
I for one am glad that seedlings can be kept around and experimented
with. I did similar work breeding Arabians, and found that it was
way too expensive trying to feed those mares that made up the middle
steps towards the goal :-)
