Mike,
The article is particular to say (discarded) seedlings, by putting it
in parentheses as I've done here. I took out the parens in my copy
because I had my own remarks in parens and didn't want it mistaken
for my interpretation.
I was surprised by this also, because when I see a numbered,
hybridizer-named seedling listed as a parent, I have assumed that
that seedling was probably used by that hybridizer in a continuing
breeding line, but at the time it was acquired and crossed by the
hyb'er of that progeny, it had probably not yet been introduced or
listed as a parent in a subsequently introduced iris.
But it did say "discarded." That would then give weight to some of
the objections of 'talkers in the previous line that rejected
seedlings should not be sent into the world to parent inferior irises.
It is also my understanding that no two crosses of the same cvs will
ever be the same, and sometimes widely different. Mike confirmed
this in noting the big difference he and his father often get from
the same crossing.
