I guess my error is in thinking of AIS as an international society and not
exclusively an American one. I prefer to think of us as one world instead
of a lot of little blocks each touting their own superiority. Maybe it is a
bit myopic to think of AIS as the international one, but it really is the
most universally recognized, and anyone who cares more about the country of
origin of the flower than about the beauty of the flower itself is missing
the point (as I'm sure that whoever makes the rules must think I am). Many
people even suggest that the symposium is the people's voice, and that the
symposium and the awards are to recognize and recommend the "best" iris; how
can that be if many of the best are not even eligible, and can only win
relatively invisible awards in their home countries. What if the finest
iris ever is introduced in Iceland next year, finds its way here, and
becomes the most popular in history. Can't win any awards unless there is a
Icelandic Iris Society. I'm sure that would give it the recognition it
deserved (I apologize to anyone unfamiliar with sarcasm, and I don't mean to
offend anyone from Iceland). Okay I still say the awards should be based on
the original introduction date which might give it a disadvantage depeding
on how long it took to show up here, but nothing's perfect. And certainly
it should have to be registered with AIS.
