Are any breeders out there working with green flower color traits in there programs. I would be interested in talking with anyone about success or failures.

V. sez:

Green irises are of two types - yellow with a hint of green, and olive. The yellow types can look greenish under certain conditions - it seems to have something to do with the soil. I used to grow ENVY, which could look faintly green. I still grow LIME FIZZ, which has always just looked yellow to me.

The olive colors tend to be muddy, and not always entirely attractive. PRIDE OF IRELAND is in this category - it was a great grower for me, but so ugly I got rid of it.

Sterling Innerst introduced an olive TB last year, which had two purple selfs as the parents. Go figger.

My favorite irises that have green in them, but are not selfs are GREEN EYED QUEEN, a magenta Siberian with a green flash, and IRISH MOSS, a SDB with lavender S and green F.

Green is supposed to be a difficult color to hybridize for, and a lot of hybridizers either won't try or have given up.
