Walter, you can also buy trumpet vine at a premium price from such sources
as Wayside Gardens.

I wonder if your Devil's Backbone tree is our Osage Orange.  Sounds
similar--Latin name Maclura pomifera.  Not native here, but planted, often
as hedging for pastures as it makes an imprenetrable thicket if regularly
chopped.  Not far from here, Patrick Henry's old homeplace (Red Hill) has
the largest Osage Orange in the country--looks to be at least 5 ft in
diameter.
