Neil, I don't believe Barry is suggesting that one should introduce only one
seedling from each cross. Surely, each seedling should be judged for
introduction based on it's merit . . . without regard to it's siblings.

Barry often introduces four or more seedlings from the same cross. My
interest was first raised with the TOMORROW'S CHILD X MAGIC MAN cross, and I
know I still find the same things as I read the R & I'S and his catalogs.
I've not searched the records for practices BEFORE the above cross. <MM is
still one of my all time favorites>

HOWEVER, there are situations in which I must take exception to the "use
only the newest iris for breeding" and I'm not getting into the "reinvent the
wheel" theory either. Let's look at a hypothetical situation, using
hypothetical conditions . . . <humor me here!> Let's say you want to breed
irises with heavy lace <G>, along the lines of QUEEN OF HEARTS, but you look
at the new irises being introduced, and, hypothetically, NO iris in the past
ten years has heavy lace! What to do??? Give up? Well, you could do that,
but you could pick out the best new iris you can find in the color pattern of
choice and cross QOH (whatever) to it. It would take some time and a lot of
selective breeding to bring the lace back to full potential.

Of course, you COULD collect all of the lacy ones and cross the best of
these (you'd get heavy lace on most seedlings), but, assuming we're still
following the above theory, you would STILL have outdated seedlings because
none of the parents were introduced in the past ten years!!!

One other thing to keep in mind. Barry's & Keith's new introductions are new
to us but not to THEM. By the time most of us can buy them, Barry & Keith
have gone on to a second or third generation beyond what we are buying for
their breeding programs.

Sometimes breeding goals suggest different practices. MHO only. >>
