OT-BIO: Janet T. US Zone 2/ Can Zone 3

Hello again,

I found a little more information about how to post in this forum, sorry for my other topic.

Clearly I am a beginner with a love for irises. I have been growing them for years and years, but would love to acquire some advise from the many master gardener's here.

My beds are all composed of TBs and would like start some MEDs in some flower boxes that I have placed by my front windows. Last year I had a very difficult time keeping up with my beds because of extremely crazy shiftwork, however, this year I'm wanting to redo all of my beds. I live in Can Zone 3/US Zone 2 and was hoping if I could ask for some tips on how I SHOULD recondition the soil for these beds. I will be ripping everything out and redoing the beds from scratch. I have some perennial fertilizer but that is all I have. I have a bad time with herbicides and any sprays because I choke
from the fumes and I have clearly gone to the very extreme end of all hand labour in pulling weeds and such. I am looking to find out what would be the best soil composition and ph level so I can grow healthy irises again. But we have had very dry summers and so I believe that is part of the problem with several of my TBs dying off.

I am looking for any tips and suggestions that you have. I don't compete, I simply raise them for my own enjoyment in my back yard and give the rhizomes at the end of the season to neighbours and friends who have visited my home who have really enjoyed a certain variety. I want to create my own multi variety iris sanctuary again, like I had years back. If you have any suggestions, I would graciously appreciate them either on the list or directly to my email at janett@telusplanet.net. Unfortunately there is not an Local Iris Society here but have gone to many sites on the internet and am
interested in getting my garden back in order.

Thank you very much for any advice you can provide.
