I tried to do an objective analysis of the data to try to quantify
variability throughout the region but there really isn't enough data.
The only thing I can say is that there is less variability in the
cultivars that do the best and the worst (for example, everybody ranked
14 cultivars better than average everywhere, & 2 were reported dead
everywhere).
Without more information, it's impossible to say how much of the
variability in the middle categories might be due to
(1) garden (i.e., pH, nutrients, drainage, care, etc) & local climate
differences (frost pockets, ups & downs of warm and freezing winter
cycles);
(2) how people evaluate what's average and what's better than average;
or
(3) year to year variability, vigor of plant when aquired, how long
cultivar has been grown (i.e., evaluating new increases grown locally or
still growing on oomph from original supplier).
Interesting to think about. & inspiration to get busy with the bonemeal
and ground limestone.
