Sometimes single rhizomes will produce more than just the terminal
bloomstalk. The additional stalks form as "branches" from the rhizome and
their fans of leaves initially look like increases. However, after
blooming, these branches die, just like the terminal bloomstalk. The "real"
increases are branches further back on the main rhizome, and it is they that
will grow through the season and bloom the following year.
This is very common in dwarf bearded irises, somewhat less so in
intermediates, and usually occurs only in well-grown tall bearded varieties,
though it would appear that some varieties have a genetic pre-disposition to
produce multiple stalks.
Of course, if every fan blooms, then you have "bloom-out" and no increase
for the next year.
