Arnold, I am very glad you as a non-judge but a great irisarian
chose to speak out on the article in Tall Talk about irises that didn't
win an award. Keep in mind that the article is one person's opinion
about those irises. I, too, have a number of irises that are favorites
of mine that have never won awards perhaps because of the
several reasons you mentioned, some of which have also been
mentioned by others on this list and in the article. Also, I have
attended many AIS conventions and the regionals, and many of
these irises were not there. The article seems to be a blanket
indictment of sloth on the part of all AIS judges, which certainly is
not the case. It is also contradictory because it states some of the
reasons the irises were overlooked, yet is so critical of the judges
for not voting for them. Elsewhere in Tall Talk, there are
advertisements for irises from the same garden mentioning 'show
stalks' and 'great for the show bench.' I'm still trying to figure all of
this out. The article was written to capture our attention and to get
us to think. It did.

SOUTHERN COMFORT is included with the "Without Reward"
irises in the article. Actually, SC won an HM in 1966 and an AM in
1970. I wish I had it back!
