Dorothy, I'm not an accredited AIS judge so I guess I wouldn't qualify for you "come and get you to see our garden" offer that you've made to judges in your area, but I wish I were close. Carol and I do a lot of visiting in our area, as much as we can. Can't get enough of the iris in their all-too-short season. We're just glad to be able to spread that season out longer by visiting gardens a 100 or 150 miles away, both north and south, let alone 20-30 miles. I can't imagine anyone, especially a judge, not taking you up on your offer. That is also jus one of the many reasons we are going to miss Larry Harder so much, because he always grew many new iris; we could always count on seeing things in his garden before almost anybody else's.
I'd say another word in defense of judges and their votes, too, however. I know that many of you will have read Phil Williams' article in the most recent issue of Tall Talk, in which he names and describes several iris he deems worthy of AIS awards yet they never made it. I think of that as well as the recent conversations in this list regarding judges who don't do their garden visiting duties. BUT, many varieties that may well be worthy of honor are distributed on such a small, regional basis that most judges never have a chance to see them, especially if they aren't displayed at a convention. And there are so many iris registered and introduced these days, that it is physically impossible for any judge to see them all, however worthy they may be. These statements aren't meant to condone judges' neglect of garden visiting responsibili-
ties, but they do help explain the neglect of some worthy varieties, maybe also the sometime selection of some that aren't so worthy.
