Hi folks,
I was out at the garden yesterday doing some maintenance and to my total surprise I discovered a lovely spike appearing on our "Water Sprite" variety, SWEET CAPRICE.
This particular rhizome was despatched from the Land of Oz to a customer in the USA last year. The US postal service returned the entire shipment to Australia by mistake, instead of sending the shipment on to its recipient in Texas. These rhizomes travelled in excess of 25,000 miles in five weeks and were in a sorry state when they finally arrived home again. Naturally enough, we sent an entirely new shipment to the patient customer in Texas, but as an experiment we replanted the tired travellers to see how they would cope. They coped alright - in fact all of them grew again after some initial coaxing from their mum (me!). Now one of them is in spike and should bloom within the next week. Yes, it's autumn here in the Land of Oz.
It's just another example of how tough Louisiana iris rhizomes are. I know for sure that if I was that rhizome and had travelled that distance over that period of time and received such treatement I'd be less than inclined to do anything much - let alone send up a nice flower spike from my lovely healthy foliage. These plants really are the survivors of the family.
Cheers for now,
Heather P.
