weather and warming/freezing

I'm kind of a beginner, and appreciate the help I've
received from you all in the past...
It's been up to 40 and more degrees (F) here in Saint Paul,
and I was out barefoot yesterday clening up icky-looking leaves
from last fall, mourning a few rotten rhizomes (only about
two of forty?) and getting anxious to see new growth.
I may have uncovered/exposed too much?
Do any of you have advice for what to do when temps are
warm in daytime but might still dip below freezing at night?
Should I be covering at night? or just covering and waiting
until more consistent warmth?
Are iris as sensitive as tulips to freezing damage?
Any input?
