So sorry to burst your balloon, but the free mail offered by Yahoo! still
exists. If you want more than the standard 4 MB of storage space, however,
you will need to pay for it. Not an unreasonable request, IMHO.
Again, that standard free web hosting only requires payment of sums of money
if you wish to have more storage space for your web site than the basic 15
MB--enough to have a really good site. The Worcester Aquarium Society web
site, which I try to maintain, with varying degrees of success only consumes
1.65 MB according to the backup and working files on my machine here (and a
lot of those are no longer used on the site, so the actual space consumed on
the server is less). This includes graphics and the java on the pages.
Finally, I could find no mention of charges for Yahoo! Groups at all.
To me, this looks like a case of the blind leading the blind, to put it
kindly. My suggestion would be to remove your name from the petition, if
you can, and/or to do a bit of your own research prior to going off half
cocked trying to get people to do something about which you really don't
know anything about. It would be far more constructive to offer, say, an
alternative plan to the powers that be at Yahoo! that may be palatable to
both you and they.
The sad fact is that the Internet is no longer "free", at least in the sense
that it once was. I've been bopping around the Internet since the late
1970's. The fact is that someone has always paid for the Internet, and it
really, truly has never been free. However, now that the corporations have
taken over, they are strictly looking at the bottom line, and if they cannot
make money with the Internet, directly or indirectly, they'll get out of the
business, and the Internet will become less and less a place to find areas
such as this, and more and more the way it used to be, a pure ASCII
messaging and file transfer area.
Who is it that has always paid for the Internet you might ask. Well, in the
very beginning, it was the great USofA, through the citizen's tax dollars.
And a lot of tax dollars are still being spent on the Internet, mainly in
developing a faster Internet than now exists. School tuitions also paid for
the Internet, since it was mainly available through schools as a way to
transfer research data and comments from one researcher to another. And,
yes, corporations, again for research done by scientists employed to develop
new products and improve old ones. Also private citizens paid for access
through bulletin board systems. Part of their monthly or yearly charges
were used to provide connectivity to the Internet through public access
points made available by the carriers of the Internet traffic. Even today,
the fees you pay your ISP go toward the maintenance of the infrastructure of
the Internet by the access fees they pay the carriers based upon the amount
of traffic they generate.
Also, don't forget the acquisition and maintenance of the servers, routers,
switches, and all the hardware that make the Internet the Internet cost real
dollars.
It is my opinion that what Yahoo! (and many others) are asking for is well
within reason, and probably way overdue. If you don't wish to pay the
piper, then you need not dance to the music.
(Sorry about this screed John.)

Subject: [iris-talk] Yahoo Petition
Hello Everyone,
I apologize for any duplicate postings, but I feel this is important
to all Yahoo users.
I have just read and signed the online petition:
"Petition to request that Yahoo Inc reconsider their decision to
charge fees for pop mail, groups, and homepages," hosted on the web
by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition service, at:
http://www.PetitionOnline.com/11213/
I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you
might
agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and
consider signing yourself.
Diana
