I have had many crosses not germinate in the fridge but sprout soon
after being potted. It's actually easier this way because I don't have
to untangle a big mess of roots. I've tried returning seeds ungerminated
to the fridge but they started to get mushy/rot. I think seeds don't
want to be put back into the fridge after 120 days.
I think fridge temperature plays a big role in germination, we keep ours
quite cold and I'm sure it doesn't help. George Sutton wrote a great
article about this in an AIS bulletin. He was getting better
germination rates in fridge that I get.
Oh course...like you, I gain valuable growing time this way. All this
didn't help much with the extreme weather we got last summer but I can
only hope it'll be easier this time around.
