<On the other hand,TB iris <really> like loose soil for their roots.>
Linda M:
My main concern has been the soil around the rhizomes (never covering them)...keeping it loose with added coarse sand and humus or peat (or are they the same thing?) to discourage rot. I do dig into the ground about 10 inches or so when I re-do an established garden or dig a new one, but maybe I should dig deeper and worry more about the roots...not that I need any more to worry about regarding my irises. ( I hover over them too much already! Guess I need to 'get a life'....) Anyway, my bloom is good - but maybe my rebloom would be better if I loosened the soil past 10-12 inches? Guess it makes sense.
Also, I find plenty of worms, but I guess there's no such thing as too many when we're dealing with clay (plain old brown type)? It's really discouraging to think about the rate of breakdown of organic material. At least the SAND doesn't do the same! (Does it?) ;-(
<I hope that's more than enough about clay?>
Yes,Linda...it's plenty to mull over, especally if one includes your earlier post. Thanks s much!!!
