I've also been having a hard time finding low nitrogen fertilzer
lately. I don't like to add much N before we have our last murderous
freeze, which usually occurs after lush, early spring growth (i.e.,
later this month). All that seems to be available these days is lawn
fertilizer (i.e., 10-10-10, 15-15-15), or, if I really hunt for it,
6-12-12.
Bone meal is too tasty - last time I used it, my golden followed me
everywhere, licking it up about as fast as I could spread it.
After calling all the feed & garden supply stores within 30 miles of
here, I gave up and was going to just use crushed limestone for now
while waiting for the local Farmers CoOp to order some triple super
phosphate. Then I found a half sack of 4-15-4 Plant Pusher buried
under some junk in the shed. This is a highly soluble fertilizer used
when transplanting tobacco sets. The local CoOp happens to have a few
bags left from last year's tobacco season, so I plan to stock up for
next spring.
I wonder if something similar might be available in other parts of the
world for transplants other than tobacco (i.e., vegetables,
strawberries)? While making calls, I learned that 0-15-15 or something
similar is available at some feed/farm stores later in the year (or now
by special order) for fertilizing strawberries.
Spring is definitely here for now! Burning the prairie this afternoon,
a bit late, but we had to wait for things to dry out. Early "wild"
daffodils almost in full bloom, red-purple little bulbous irises in one
sunny location already gone. & I think I see a tiny little tip of the
latest batch of iris seeds starting to poke thru the surface of the seed
flats.
