Mixing your own isn't too difficult. We mix our own
fertilizer, but only for fall application. What we do:
We buy bulk bags of triple superphosphate 0-45-0
and muriate of potash 0-0-63. Since the potash is
higher, we would mix approximately 4 parts of potash
with 5 parts of the superphosphate (use a coffee can) to get equal
proportions. This leaves the strength of the components
roughly equal. To approximate the same application rate
as 0-10-10 you would then apply this at 1/4 or 1/5 the amount
per square foot. If you want to add nitrogen to the mix, use
the same logic. Remember that under fertilizing is better than
over fertilizing, especially when you are talking nitrogen
and bearded irises.
If you don't want to thru all this, find some common bulk fertilizer
such as 6-24-24 and cut the application rate in half, giving the effect
of 3-12-12.
We do the concentrated bulk method because of cost savings and
less bags to transport. One and one-half acres of irises can take
a lot of fertilizer. We buy 50# bags of the fertilizer above for 15$
on the triple sp and 10$ for the potash. One bag of each does us
for the season.
