This is true, sometimes I have found odd things coming
up and blooming in the middle of a clump. Any little
piece left behind after a digging has potential to
live, grow and bloom.
A few years ago I noticed that one of the fans in my
clump of Purple Streaker had developed variegated
leaves. I carefully removed the soil to check if it
was attached to the mother plant and it was. As you
can imagine, I became very excited to think that
perhaps it was a sport of Purple Streaker with
variegated leaves. I think I may have even posted
something about it on iris-l at the time. Anyway,
after the season, I dug it and grew it next to the
original clump and as Murphy's Law would have it, it
never showed any sign of variegated foliage ever
again.
However, one side of my clump of Cybernet is showing a
different broken color pattern. I have been watching
this for two years now. Looks like it's relatively
stable.
Seems as though broken color things are more prone to
producing sports (like the famous Joseph's Coat).
