Yes, Sandra, as I remember the history, F. X. Schreiner moved the business
from Minnesota to Oregon.
As to the orchid line, I looked at the AMETHYST FLAME family tree on the HIPS
website and saw Sass, Cook (over and over) and some less stress-filled loci
for the ancestral roots of this line. Cook's Indiana home is in the same
weather-volatile slice of the continent the rest of us are--from the high
plains in Canada right down across the upper Midwest and Ohio valley areas and
into the Appalachins. The ancestral varieties such as MATULA, DREAMCASTLE,
PATHFINDER, and RAMESES come from our wide-open contental climate, but the
Egelberg irises such as ANGELUS I'm not sure about. I can't for the present
read the fine print in the back of the 1939 CL to see where these originated.
My guess is that they also are upper Midwestern in origin.
We could have it worse--at least we don't have the Himalayas south of us.
Those folks in Siberia, Mongolia and southeastward into heavily populated
areas of China that reside in the Asian analog of our place on the North
American continent not only have the abrupt frosts to live with, they have
huge dust problems too. I'd lots rather grow irises here in NC than in the
parts of China at this latitude. The comment is not about politics, should
there be any misunderstanding--it is about climate, prevailing winds and the
consequences of hurricanes.
