Re: CULT: Survivors and Quality kin

Morning Neil,

I don't know that I've tried any except SWINGTOWN. I'm rather inclined to
choose another color. I have blues that do pretty well. The old SHINING
WATERS, BREAKERS, STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN and it looks like SUDDEN IMPACT is
going to be good. WHERE THERE'S SMOKE does well. The seedlings from
BREAKERS have done really well, but the two choices for a pollen parent -
YAQUINA BLUE or NAVAJO JEWEL have not done so well. NJ is here and
currently looks good, but it's had a history of declining to a single fan
and managing to recover. If it continues doing that it will be one-upped by
the weather and be gone one of these days. YB simply bloomed out and I
didn't try it again. I think it's the true pollen parent..

But none of those would be orchids, would they? They might share some
common ancestors, but I haven't checked.

Yes, I expect your 7b and mine are quite different. I think the one thing
most areas of zone 7 share is more variability in weather temperature
swings. Zones above and below have more consistency (though not guaranteed)
than Z 7. The result is more extremes and bigger differences in growing
conditions year to year. Mine part tends toward low rainfall and low
humidity most of the time.
