Re: TB COLOR; lilac vs. lavender

Linda,

> Donald: My lilac bushes are lavender as opposed to blue. To me, lilac
has some pink to it (or rose, as Dorothy said) and could be described as
pinkish lavender. Lavender, in my humble and inexpert opinion, is very pale
purplish blue.

Good enough. If my reference for lilac was old fashioned lilac bushes in
bloom, I didn't really have a reference for lavender. When I think of the
plants known as lavenders by name, they seemed too dark - or closer to
purple - than what has been called lavender in irises. Or maybe my
perception of them is that they are more purple. Both would have more pink
or rose than purple. But I even have trouble with purple when it comes to
tying it down. Often what is called purple in irises has more red than I'm
accustomed to thinking purple contains. The common old 'purple flags'
pretty much define what I think of when purple is used. However, that color
is different than the purple often used in descriptions of THORNBIRD.

I'm often intrigued by descriptions and purchase accordingly. I've been
surprised a lot, needless to say. Often pleased, but surprised nonetheless.
There is no way to view everything I'm interested in firsthand, so I accept
that what I end up seeing is not what my mind creates from the descriptions.
This has especially proved true of the arilbreds. Quite often on those, and
on fancy plicatas? the first mention is of the ground color. It doesn't
follow the ingredient list formula found on a snack package, that's for
sure. There the first item has the biggest portion and in irises the ground
color is often all but obscured by what follows. I know you can't trust
descriptions exactly, but I don't trust photos for color either. Cameras
pick up things the eye sees quite differently all too often. Photos with
taken with sunlight illuminating a bloom can sure change the effect. Or
shade for that matter. And sometimes the collection of colors on a bloom
leaves an impression of a color that isn't there at all.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.
