I'm not sure just how far north Jean Stevens was in New Zealand, but the
climate in general for the two islands spans the range of what one finds in
Oregon to Alaska (Juneau area). The majority of the inhabitable area is in the
North Island.
Just guessing, I would suspect her conditions were most probably very similar
to coastal Oregon or the adjoining areas of Washington state but probably a
bit (or more than a bit) affected by the highly energetic winds that circle
Antarctica. The climate is classed as "Marine West Coast." I would expect
the soils and general conditions to be generally similar to those found
somewhere between Tillamook, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington.
Maybe one of the Australian contributors to Iris-talk could correct this if I
am in error.
