It was well below freezing here last night, Linda, as it has been several
times in the last week, but there are no flower heads in the TB fans yet, so
nothing to worry about from that quarter. Frankly, the longer it stays
cold, the better I like it, so the plants don't jump up too early and get
zapped.
01J14 and its siblings are mid-season bloomers, so not particularly
susceptible to the late freeze dangers. I'm sorry that CHAMPAGNE ELEGANCE
and LADY FRIEND get nipped badly in your area. CE grows like a weed here,
and LADY FRIEND has been a hardy perennial except, as previously noted, that
it was hard hit by last year's rains and didn't bloom.
I'm afraid I have to add FIERY TEMPER to the list of those newly-planteds
that lost their center fans to the winter. Fortunately, there are increases
that have survived on it and on SOCIAL GRACES and GOOD DAY OREGON, so a
bloom season is lost, but the plants are saved (fingers crossed).
I'm beginning to think that the problem with my seedling beds which are
located 4 miles away is that the water table is so high there that the soil
is saturated and that that makes it more susceptible to freezing and
heaving. The pattern is clear in the two 20' x 30' plots. Both plots slope
downward to the east, and the heaving is most prevalent in those lower ends.
In the older of the two plots, the water table at this time of year is only
a foot below the surface, and we have not had an excess of rainfall this
year. Even though the beds are raised, they are only a few inches more
above that water table. While my TBs have been struggling there, some
Louisianas that I stuck in the lowest corner a couple of years ago have gone
wild and will have to be culled this year just to keep them from invading
the adjacent TB bed. -- Griff
