Re: I. wattii
Hi Greg,
Stop watering it so it can dry out. ASAP plant a backup pot just in case.
I have a small I. wattii started from seed last year. I'm finding out that
it seems to prefer the same treatment I give the I. japonica. When I divided
and repotted my japonica I put them in a shaded greenhouse over the summer
and since the temperatures were high, I thought it best to keep them well
watered. I promptly lost one to rot and the other wasn't doing well at all.
Hunting for the right size pot for something else, I stumbled across a third
pot of japonica that I'd completely forgotten behind the greenhouse in
nearly full shade. (It happens.). It hadn't had a drop of water since being
repotted over a month before and was growing like a weed in spite of temps
in the 90-100 range.
Since then I've kept them in part to full shade and watered only when the
pots are really starting to dry out and keep them on this schedule until I
see the first sign of bloom stems. That's when they start getting fertilizer
and enough water to keep the soil damp. As soon as they finish bloom, they
go back on a starvation diet.
