Re: RE:Genetics- Swertii and aplhylla

I think we are building a dialogue on two errors; First most botanists agree that the mention of Swerti as an Iris aphylla was an error in the Curtis Botaniacal Magazine. Botanists have made mistakes before when dealing with Iris. Second we are resurrecting this idea based on a chromosome count reported for Iris Sweetseri. It seems to me that this spelling is so far off the mark that attributing it to Swerti would be folly. Maybe Randolph was talking about Sweets Iris. Robert Sweet described and illustrated a several forms of Iris aphylla. Of course we will not know for sure without someone counting Swerti again. But I hate to see this line of supposition get too far out of hand. Although the logic has been great it seems we are violating Ochams Razor. The simplest explanation would just acknowledge these errors and dismiss any connection to Iris aphylla.
