Slow release is not cost effective. The nitrogen component is the
"controlled" nutrient. The other two stay in the soil until used by the plant or leached
out by water. The nitrogen component of regular fertilizers is available for 3
to 4 months after application.
I'm presently using 5-20-20 but will be using some 6-12-12. One brand is good
as another. Nutrient level consistency is regulated and monitored/tested by
many (most?) states at both the retail and manufacturing level.
Both phosphate and phosphorous "poisoning" are possible with severe over
application.
