It is clear from the content of the entry in the '39 Checklist for Sturtevant's PRINCE CHARMING that it was both registered and introduced in 1924.
 
This would not be by any means the only case of a historic iris that, as l understand it, is still known to be in existence having its name reissued to a modern introduction. The case in point is SILVERADO (Wm. Mohr, 1923). In 1960 without any acknowledgment that there was an earlier iris of this name, a seedling by Raymond Matz was registered as SILVERADO by the AIS. As the Matz seedling was never introduced, it was officially disposed of in 1986, and the name was transferred to the well known Schreiner iris, which was introduced in 1987.

Jeff, I believe the key word here is un-introduced. If the original, 
(before Williamson) was introduced, my understanding would be that the name can NOT 
be used again.
