HYB: Question regarding white TB as parent.

Steve, I have two suggestions.

First, SILVERADO is a superlative near-white "bluebird blue" that will breed
as a white. Its numerous offspring are also worth considering, as some of
them show real advancements in a number of directions. One of my reasons for
mentioning this variety, in addition to the fact that in 1994 it was the Dykes
Medal winner, is its ancestry. The Schreiners combined several of their long
lines of superior development--including the blacks--then outcrossed to a
white, CARRIAGE TRADE, known for its superior offspring.

This reaching back to several distinct lines of breeding and combining them in
one superlative iris offers the breeder opportunities to go many different
directions with his or her efforts.

Another near-white is the lovely FOGBOUND from Keith Keppel. I and several
other people find it a superlative parent. It has a delicate pink deep in the
beard, and a flush of delicate pink on the inner, almost hidden part of the
hafts. The standards have somewhat deeper tone, so it is a "dark top"
although a light-colored one. It, too, represents a combining of several
lines of breeding--pinks, Schreiner blues (Honky Tonk Blues is a grandparent)
and more. As with SILVERADO one can hardly go wrong with FOGBOUND. It has
given near blues, pinks, orchids, even yellows when crossed with them. I
particularly like the satin or silk texture in some of its offspring.

Both of these have excellent branching and plant habit, and often pass this on
to their seedlings.

Best of luck in your hybriding venture!
