CULT: ?fertilizer

Betty, I think you asked a question a while back about when folks apply
fertilizer, how much, what kind. Don't remember seeing much response.

I never know when to apply it - early spring/late winter, when plants
are starting to grow, and I worry about too much lush growth before we
have our usual last nasty late killing freeze that kills off bloom.

Too late, and maybe bloom isn't as good or as fertile?

I've been using tobacco fertilizer the last few years - higher phosphate
than most garden fertilizer. Seems like it's 5 15 10. I haven't put
any on the iris this spring, but think I better not wait much longer.

?

The biggest difference I've seen since using it is that it seems to have
changed our weather patterns <G> - no bad late freezes to damage bloom
the last two years.

Betty, what did you decide to do?

Would love to hear how others decide when to apply fertilizer.

Thanks all.

Lining out leftover babies from last fall into the main garden rows.
Gorgeous sunny warm weather.
