Thought you folks might find this interesting -
summer 2003 I did reverse crosses between PINK FORMAL and CELEBRATION
SONG, got one pod each containing around 50 seeds.
The seeds were handled the same way, but kept separate.
Fall/winter 2004
around 19 seedlings germinated from PINK FORMAL X CSONG (around 17
currently surviving)
around 2 germinated from CSONG X PINK FORMAL - both died.
Fall/winter 2005
one additional seedling up from PINK FORMAL X CSONG last summer
around 15 up so far from CSONG X PINK FORMAL.
Looks like maternal plant not only affects vegetative growth, but also
can influence seed dormancy & the number/duration of chilling cycles
required to break it.
I'm in a rush, so am guessing at numbers. If anybody wants to know, I
will dig out my notes from last year and post actual data.
