CULT: Iris Season Liftoff in northern Utah

Greetings All:

The iris bloom season began today here in northern Utah (USDA Zone 4b) when the first reticulata flower appeared, a purple with a white signal spot, which I believe is the cultivar PAULINE.

As recently as last weekend the ground here was 95% snow-covered, but there has been considerable thawing this week, mainly the effect of abundant rain, rather than sunshine or warmth, which have been in meager supply.

I have had reticulatas bloom as much as a month earlier than this, and they usually come into bloom before the middle of March, but this year there was simply too much snow on the ground for too long. Some of my larger iris beds are still under white mulch.

Hope the rest of you in the low numbered zones are also seeing signs of spring!
