Sounds to me like this is an opportunity for an aggressive breeder to tear
into. I can think of some superior parents that should be very
useful--especially FOGBOUND, as it tends to pass on superior branching,
substance and form to its rapidly growing number of offspring. Current
introductions from Joe Ghio, Mid-America. Blyth all include Fogbound offspring
and I'm growing a bunch of Fogbound offspring here too. I am awestruck by the
quality in the crosses.
Some of the current introductions are into second generation crosses between
Fogbound offspring. We'll be seeing more of that sort of seedlings in the
future, I expect.
With its background, Fogbound should be both cold hardy and heat tolerant.
I'd be interested to hear any comments to the contrary.
Fogbound excels in the "pastel" range (i. e., pink) beards, but just needs
crosses with bright red-beardeds, especially those with BIG red beards perhaps
to produce them--I hope. Several Keppel and Blyth varieties qualify, as do
some of several other varieties from a variety of lines. Combining white with
bushy red beards on a good stalk, etc. may be a multi-generational project,
but worth it.
Crosses with blues or pinks with bright, bushy red-red beards may be harder to
come by, but there are quite a few out on the market to select from. Getting
the yellow (pink) to drop out without losing the beard color may be the kicker
in this--as has always been the case. White flower=pale beard, but not
always. The truly whites with really red beards have always been
scarce--that's why those of you mentioning varieties are spanning decades to
produce a few names.
What an interesting challenge!
