Linda,

The worst (visible)aphid problems here occur in the
late fall after nighttime frosts become routine and
before snow covers the ground. Under the worst
conditions the tightly packed mass of aphids can
completely cover the leaf bases, which is where they
congregate (presumably they can only remain active by
taking advantage of the residual heat close to the
ground). They definitely seem to affect cultivars with
purple-based foliage the worst; again this could be a
heat factor.
