My experience here with Wishful Thinking is limited by the less-than-desirable
conditions in which I've had it most of the time. It is a survivor, for sure,
but hasn't thrived as much as you all describe, due to lack of sufficiently
decent conditions.
As far as quality and finish, WT does have it all. I wouldn't hesitate to use
it, but my attempts with it have all failed. I have no idea why. It could be
just pure chance.
Bel Esprit has clung to life as well in an area where many have died
completely this past fall and winter. I note its survival with interest.
Alpenview is in a slightly better location with somewhat better soil and
drainage, along with another Fogbound offspring, Paris Fashion. Both thrive,
and I would not hesitate to recommend either. I have yet to bloom the Parish
Fashion seedlings, but some of them have come through like troopers and showed
promising vigor.
I, too, will be interested in Barbara Null's Wm. A. Setchell outcomes,
especially with the character of its falls. I would expect a few generations
with selective outcrosses and interbreeding among the seedlings could show
steady gains toward more modernly acceptable forms.
Why not consider Lent A. Williamson and/or Dolly Madison as alternative
starting points? Talk about survivors! They do have the advantage of being
in an astonishingly large number of progenies, have far more "modern"
qualities than Setchell, and have almost omnipotential breeding value. Their
descendents span the range of iris colors.
