Trying to reconstruct what we were using - they were Zeiss phase contrast microscopes. Looks like those were a new invention right before I started work using them. I remember everybody making a big fuss about them, but I was too ignorant to appreciate the improvement.
Not sure we were using oil immersion lenses - I don't remember that. Maybe stain and phase contrast was enough.
